WHAT IS EQUINE ASSISTED PSYCHOTHERAPY (EAP)? Equine Assisted Psychotherapy, or EAP, is a collaborative effort between a licensed therapist and an equine specialist. Because of its intensity and effectiveness, EAP is a short-term approach, and can be a wonderful addition to traditional talk therapy. EAP is experiential in nature. Clients will learn about themselves and others by participating in activities with the horses, and then processing (or discussing) feelings, behaviors, and patterns. Interacting with horses -- dynamic and inspiring living beings -- adds a powerful metaphoric and reflective tool to conventional therapy. The focus of EAP is NOT on riding or instruction. In fact, over 90% of EAP sessions take place on the ground, and challenge the client to discover their own way. Non-verbal communication, assertiveness, creative thinking and problem-solving, work and career issues, family dynamics and relationships, confidence and self-esteem building are just a few examples of the issues that can be addressed in one or more EAP sessions. From a mental health perspective, Equine Assisted Psychotherapy can be an effective additional treatment for attention deficit disorder, substance abuse issues, eating disorders, depression, anxiety, post-traumatic stress disorder, and much more.
